100% Zinfandel from Dry Creek, Mendocino, California. Certified Organic, Unfiltered, Low Intervention, Woman Winemaker.
HISTORY: The site has been organically farmed by the owner, Adel Atallah, since about 2011. In 2018, Randy and Erin took over the farming and have improved the health of the soil with compost additions and tilth-improving cover crop.
ABOUT: Our friends, wine industry vet Erin Mitchell and her vineyard manager husband Randy, make a small but growing lineup of organic wine that manages to be both interesting and provocative while also being super friendly to natural wine newbies. Like this playful take on zinfandel, which pays homage to the White Zin wines that our parents served at dinner soirées in the 1970’s and 80’s.
VINIFICATION: The soil is composed of Brown, Gravelly, Clay & Loam soils. All harvested by hand and pressed after a brief maceration into stainless steel, where it settles and ferments naturally. There is a short elevage in puncheons, followed by a very small dose of SO2 prior to bottling unfined and unfiltered. Grapes are Whole cluster pressed, and then Fermented in a Concrete Egg and Stainless Steel tank, after which the wine is rested in the Concrete egg for 7 months before bottling; 12.5% ABV; 133 cases made.
TASTING NOTES: A light Copper color, with aromas of Red Berries, Citrus, Rhubarb & Earth. This wine has crisp texture on the palate, with nicely concentrated notes of Cherry, Strawberry and Red-Plum flavors, with additional notes of Melon, Minerals & Citrus fruits on the fresh & tangy medium-length finish.
FOOD PAIRING: This wine makes a perfect Aperitif, and will pair exceptionally well Appetizers, Snacks, lighter meats like Roast Chicken or Turkey, White Meats like Pork, Veal, & Rabbit, or with Spicy Foods. Serve chilled (but not too cold!).
