HISTORY: Metrick is Alex Russan of Alexander Jules' personal project and laboratory for wine exploration. After falling in love with the volcanic soils and wild scenery of El Dorado (bears and mountain lions frequent the local vineyards), Russan thought earthy Mourvédre would pair well with the earth and funk that often comes from volcanic soils. Grower Ron Mansfield is exceptionally tuned into the needs of each plot he farms.In the vineyards, Alex works with his growers to maintain leaf coverage. By protecting the grapes from the harsh Southern California sun, more delicate and diverse aromatics are maintained: herbs and earth in reds, floral, citric and stony in whites.
TERROIR: Deep volcanic clay soils, which, owing to the depth/clay content, Ron is able to dry farm in most years. Days can get hot, but at 2800 feet altitude, nights are always cool.
VINIFICATION: Mansfield has developed a unique trellising system, a type of vertical cordon, which assists with airflow (mildew pressure can be high here) and dappled sunlight (high altitude sun is intense). Integrated Pest management, gentle and thoughtful viticulture utilizing very judicious use of non-organic chemicals. Vineyards: Dry farmed most years. Practicing Organic. Winemaking: Open top fermentation, aged 11 months in a single, 280-gallon concrete tank. Unfined/unfiltered. Production: 1,380 bottles Alcohol: 12% Alc. Suitable for Vegans.
TASTING NOTES: This light bodied dry red wine has lightly perfumed aromas of both Red and Black Fruits, with a touch of Truffle and Earth. On the palate this wine is balanced between light tannic structure and crisp acidity. Primary notes of Strawberry, Cherry, Blackberry & Cassis are supported by Sous Bois & Truffle, along with a distinct volcanic minerality. Light and savory, this wine is a subtle, but delicious, example of the range of wine styles California has to offer.
FOOD PAIRING: Pair this wine with lightly seasoned dishes, Venison, Beef or Buffalo Burgers, Duck, Poultry or Game Fowl, Barbecue, or Beef or Lamb Stew seasoned with White Pepper, Lavender, Rosemary & Thyme.
