HISTORY: Julia and Alex Alvarez-Perez are a husband team that worked in restaurants for many years before moving into winemaking. After working at wineries in the Burgenland of Austria and the Adelaide Hills of Australia, we moved to the Finger Lakes of New York. "Here, we’ve found an amazing community of growers and winemakers dedicated to pushing the region forward. We hope to contribute a small part to that."

ABOUT: This is the only planting of Tocai Friulano in the Finger Lakes. Usonia is dedicated to exploring new ways forward for New York wine. Our name comes from the architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who used "Usonia" to refer to his vision of a fully democratic American landscape, free of Old World conventions. We focus on varieties we believe are appropriate to our cold climate. We strive to make vibrant, honest wines true to the place they come from. 

VINIFICATION: Hand harvested, de-stemmed, spontaneously fermented on the skins for roughly two weeks. Aged ⅔ in stainless steel and ⅓ in neutral barrel for 8 months. Sulfured after malolactic and at bottling. Unfined and unfiltered.

TASTING NOTES: Fully skin-fermented, this wine exudes notes of Pine Resin, Green Peppercorn, and Pineapple, with Spice notes. As it opens, it develops a beautiful Herbaceousness, with hints of Melon and Sarsparilla on the finish. It’s lush and textural, yet fresh and quaffable – a style we frankly didn’t think we’d ever achieve here in our cool climate!

FOOD PAIRING: Pair this wine with Full Flavored & Spicy dishes, such as Mexican, especially spicy Fish Tacos, Korean Fried Chicken, Roast Poultry such as Turkey & Chicken, Pork Chops, or with Soft or Aged Finger Lakes Cheeses. This wine will also pair exceptionally well with spicy Thai, Indian or Southeast Asian Curries, as well as Vegetable-based/Vegetarian dishes. This wine also pairs with Goat Cheese, Avocado, Eggs & Breakfast.
